What does the name Moko for Moko's mean?
Firstly, the name is a representation of the fun wairua (spirit) of our brand.
The first 'moko' in the name is short for 'tā moko' and the second 'moko' is short for 'Mokopuna' (grandchild/ren). So the name literally means tā moko for grandchildren, which for us speaks to intergenerational connection. In maoridom there is a huge emphasis on connection, and one of the best ways we learn about those connections is through the older generations we are lucky enough to still have around.
We understand there is no 'S' in the Māori language but we added it to our name because it's the way our grandparents refer to us and we wanted to convey that feeling in the name.
What is tā moko?
Tā moko is the art of Māori tattooing and has been around for many generations. It's origins are tied to Rūaumoko the god of earthquakes and volcanic activity. Tā moko can represent an unlimited amount of things, but is commonly used to represent whānau (family) and whakapapa (genealogy).
